William Rensselaer BROOKS was
born in New York State, probably in Sullivan County, in 1821. He
died in the Civil War in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Jul 5, 1864. The New
York State Adjutant General’s office Summary of Service shows he
enlisted on Sep 21, 1862 at the age of 40 for three years. He mustered
in on Oct 25, 1862. A card on file in the office of the National
Cemetery in Baton Rouge states that he died of typhoid fever in the United
States General Hospital there and that he is buried in Section 9, grave
number 503. He was a member of Company E, 161st Regiment, New York State
